CANTON--124 runners and walkers took part in the 12th Annual Nicole Fleury Memorial Walk/Run on Sunday, Sept. 19 at SUNY Canton.
The race is a very special event at SUNY Canton as it provides an opportunity to honor a very special individual. Nicole Fleury was a two-sport standout student-athlete at SUNY canton, but beyond that was an individual who each and every day demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and incredible character. Nicole tragically lost her life in a car accident during her senior year and the Walk/Run was established to honor her memory. “It was great to see so many people come out for this year’s event,” said race organizer Dr. Diane Para.
“The great weather, our great volunteers, and enthusiastic participants made it a very successful day.
” All the proceeds generated from the event will go towards a scholarship for a veterinary science student as well as youth scholarships for local sports camps.
This year’s recipient for the second year in a row is Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) who is on the women’s basketball and softball teams.
This year's course ran through campus and the groomed, wooded trails running along the river, and finished adjacent to the construction project of SUNY Canton's new athletic and recreation center. There were awards handed out for first and second place in various age categories for both runners and walkers.
The overall winners of the race were Beth Nee who ran in a time of 23:14 and Milton Richards who recorded a time of 20:19. Runners Female 11-15: 1st place-Emily Pinckney, 2nd place-Lyndsay Johnson
