#10 Vermont edges Saints 2-1

St. Lawrence University men's hockey coach Greg Carvel gave freshman goalie Kyle Hayton a night off, but got another outstanding goaltending performance anyway as sophomore Tyler Parks turned in a strong performance, but the Saints came out on the short end of a 2-1 score for the second straight game.

Vermont scored a pair of first period goals and made them stand up for their 12th win of the year and a perfect 6-0-0 home record. The loss was the third one goal loss to a nationally ranked team for the 8-7-1 Saints while UVM, which will play the Saints in a rematch at Appleton Arena Saturday night, is now 12-3-1 on the year.

Parks made his first appearance since a January game against Yale in Canton and his first start in just short of a year as his last start was also at Vermont on Dec. 14 of last year. He finished with 22 saves as Vermont had a slight 24-23 edge in shots on goal in a game which featured end-to-end action as well as some solid defensive efforts.

The Catamounts scored on two of the first four shots and Parks didn't have a chance on either shot. The first came when the Saint defense gave up the puck right in front of its own goal and sophomore wing Mike Stenerson took it, cut across the front of the crease and tucked the puck past Parks at 8:18. It went to 2-0 just over two minutes later when freshman Anthony Petruzelli deflected a blast from the point by Nick Luukko for his fourth of the season at 10:35.

The Saints, who had scored just once in their previous 22 power plays and were up against the nation's top penalty kill, scored just 24 seconds into their first opportunity of the night to make it a 2-1 game after one period. Gavin Bayreuther sent the puck low to Pat Doherty, who made a quick cross crease pass to Brian Ward at the opposite post and Ward buried his third of the year at 18:30.

That completed the scoring for the game as both goaltenders came up with their share of big saves and each team missed a couple of great chances through 40 scoreless minutes.

The Saints had to kill off three Vermont power plays in the second period, two of them virtually back to back and held the Catamounts scoreless in five chances for the night.
