Regarding “Don’t Keep Obama” (Sound Off, July 20-26): Another letter writer doing the bidding of Paul Ryan. The budget deficits faced by the United States are primarily the result of military action in Iraq and Afghanistan, and secondarily the result of Bush-era tax cuts. Allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire as scheduled (restoring top marginal tax rates to a level still far below Reagan-era rates) would halve projected deficits. It’s bizarre that so many angry Americans would rather listen to the insanity peddled by McConnell and Boehner than the estimates of credible economists. Finally, it is unclear why President’s Obama talking out of “both sides of his face” would necessitate the original letter writer’s purchasing hearing aids.
