In August the county obtained judicial settlement of $27,367 following several fraud investigations by the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services and the District Attorney’s Office.
The settlements involved sanctions to prevent individuals from receiving further benefits from the programs they defrauded, according to county staffers.
The investigations focused on the crimes of welfare fraud, offering a false instrument for filing, unlawful use of a benefit card, forgery and other violations of the state Penal Law.
The programs affected by the reported fraud include SNAP (Food Stamps), Temporary Assistance, Day Care, Medicaid, and HEAP.
Investigations are ongoing and arrests are pending, according to officials.
The public can report suspected welfare fraud to the DOSS Investigations Unit at 379-2145 or at www.otda.nygov/welfarefraud. Reporters may remain anonymous.
