CANTON -- Canton police arrested a 23-year-old man after he was recorded on surveillance video kicking out the glass of a door at the municipal building at 60 Main St. early this morning.

The exterior door of the Canton Municipal Building is left unlocked for community residents who may need to reach the police department. A vestibule inside the main entrance contains a phone residents can use to reach police who operate out of the station at the back of the building.

Police said video footage revealed that Roche walked up to the front interior door in the vestibule at about 3 a.m. and kicked the glass portion of the door, shattering it. He then left the scene, driving a car from the Nice & Easy parking lot next door to the muncipal building. Roche failed to stop before exiting the parking lot onto Main Street said police.

Officers were able to positively identify Roche later in the morning from reviewing the video footage.

He was arraigned in Canton town court, and subsequently released under the supervision of the county Probation Department. He is scheduled to reappear in town court on Dec. 20.

Police said following his arraignment, Roche was observed by officers at 2:39 p.m. driving a vehicle out of the Nice & Easy parking lot and onto Main Street. He was subsequently stopped on Gouverneur Street and additionally charged with another count of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and unlicensed operator.

Roche is scheduled to appear in Canton town court for these new charges on Nov. 1.
