Seaway Tech students bake, donate 380 apple streusel pies for area families in need during holidays
|
NORWOOD -- If one looked through the windows of Mrs. Smith’s Culinary Arts class at the Seaway Career and Technical Education Center recently, one would see a “flurry” of activity.
Students were busy making apple streusel pies – lots of apple streusel pies and preparing turkeys for food baskets for the holiday season.
Thanks to the generous donation of apples from Mr. and Mrs. Carr, owners of Brookdale Apple Orchard, Winthrop, the Culinary Arts students were able to pick 55 bushels of apples.
Of course, in order to get all those pies done in a timely fashion, lots and lots of help was needed preparing the apples for the pies.
Students in other classes volunteered their time to help. Students enrolled in Computer and Business Technology, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood, GED and Health Careers classes helped to wash, peel and cut the apples.
With their help, the Culinary Arts students were able to make 380 apple streusel pies.
The pies were donated to the Twin Rivers Ecumenical Council, serving the Colton-Pierrepont, Parishville-Hopkinton and South end of Potsdam areas; Massena Salvation Army, which services Raymondville, Massena, North Lawrence and Helena; Potsdam Methodist Church; Community Christmas Baskets of Brasher Falls for the towns of Lawrence, Stockholm and Brasher Falls; and the Neighborhood Center in Canton.
In addition, the Culinary Arts students prepared over 200 pounds of turkey with all the trimmings including desserts for the Canton Methodist Church’s Goodwill dinner, and turkeys were also prepared and donated to the Senior Golden Agers in Norwood.
With the help of many individuals at the Tech Center, all eight districts represented at the Seaway Career and Technical Education Center were able to benefit from these worthwhile community service projects.
