Gouverneur man arrested for illegally hunting deer

GOUVERNEUR – A Gouverneur man is facing multiple charges for illegally hunting deer, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies arrested Anthony S. Weatherup, 23, of 303 Hermon Rd., Gouverneur, for taking a doe without a permit, taking wildlife from a highway, shooting from a public highway , taking deer during closed hours and illegally taking protected wildlife.
He was charged at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after state Environmental Conservation Officers observed a suspicious vehicle in a field on the Walker Road.
A companion, Christopher Shampine, 23, of 71 Bullard St., was ticketed with a traffic violation, deputies said.
The investigation is continuing, deputies said. The men are to face the charges in Gouverneur Town Court on Nov. 19.
