This rendering of one student’s idea for renovating the Potsdam Public Library is a preliminary image, according to Dave Beck, Director of Clarkson’s Digital Arts & Sciences Program. The images at the reception will have a more finished look, he says.
3-D digital design class creates 'dream' renovation of Potsdam Public Library interior

POTSDAM -- A 3-D digital design class at Clarkson University has mixed conceptual ideas with real-world applications to provide the Potsdam Public Library with a new vision for the design of a 21st-century library interior.

The community is invited to attend the opening reception of "The Potsdam Public Library Virtual Renovation" on Friday, Nov. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the library.

“This is us dreaming,” said Potsdam Public Library Director Pat Musante, emphasizing for taxpayers that it is not a plan.

The projects are presented as posters that display architectural wireframe models, 3- flythrough animations, and printed photorealistic rendered images.

The students will be present for discussion and refreshments will be served.

Through extensive research on both modern and historical libraries, each student designed and modeled their vision of what the interior space of the Potsdam Public Library could look like in the future.

Throughout the process, the students worked closely with Musante and Youth Services Librarian Sarah Sachs. "Mrs. Sachs and I were overwhelmed by the excellent and creative work of the students and we hope the community will join us to give its input," said Musante.

"We do not want the taxpayers to panic about a possible renovation project during this difficult economic time, as we are simply getting ideas and pulling a dream together for the future, Musante said.

“We feel confident that this project will help our efforts to raise money through grants and fund-raising activities."

The students utilized a variety of technical data in their research, including the library's architectural floor plans and unique attributes found in public and university libraries throughout St. Lawrence County.
