HEAP to begin accepting applications for heating assistance Nov. 2

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services begins accepting applications under the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) on Nov. 2.
The income guidelines for eligibility in the 2009-2010 heating assistance program are, for a household of one, a maximum monthly income of $2,030; household of two, $2,654; three, $3,279; four, $3,903; five, $4,528; six, $5,152; seven, $5,269; eight, $5,386; nine, $5,503; 10, $5,620; 11, $6,029; 12, $6,496; 13, $6,964; 14, $7,431; 15, $7,899; and each additional person, $468 more.
The regular benefit is based on income. If you received a benefit in the 2008-2009 season, you will be able to apply through the mail. The emergency benefit is based on income and available resources.
The HEAP Program also helps with furnace repair and replacement if the applicant owns and is living in the home requesting service.
Anyone interested in applying should contact the Department of Social Services at 379-2303 to set up an interview or request an application to be sent to your address. Also, you can communicate to the HEAP Unit by e-mail at heap.stlawrence@dfa.state.ny.us.
In addition to HEAP applications being accepted at the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services in Canton, alternate sites are available at St. Vincent De Paul Society in Massena, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., call 769-1200 to set up appointment; St. Lawrence County Housing Council, Inc. serving Cranberry Lake, Star Lake and Piercefield areas, Tuesday and Thursday by appointment by calling 386-8576, ext. 57; Catholic Charities in Ogdensburg, by appointment only, call 393-2660; and the Gouverneur Neighborhood Center, weekdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., call 287-3370 or stop in for appointment.
Households receiving Food Stamps or Public Assistance do not ordinarily need to complete a HEAP application.
Any questions about HEAP can be directed to the household’s Food Stamp or Public Assistance worker.
