County Housing Council setting up heating help center in Cranberry Lake

Thursday, October 08, 2009, 11:28am
CRANBERRY LAKE – The St. Lawrence County Housing Council will be helping people in the southernmost part of St. Lawrence County with Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) certification from Nov. 2 through April 30.

SLCHC has set up an Outreach Center at the Cranberry Lake Community Center. In addition to providing HEAP services, SLCHC will also act as a referral agency, providing community members with information about other community service organizations and agencies.

HEAP is the federally funded program that helps eligible people pay for electricity, natural gas, heating oil, coal, propane, wood, and kerosene during the cold winter months. The amount of money a person receives depends on household income, the number of people living in the home and their ages, the kind of heating system, and fuel costs compared to household income.

As an alternate certifier, the St. Lawrence County Housing Council can only serve those who have not received Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) funds in the past and can only serve those applying for Regular HEAP benefits.

Appointments must be scheduled in advance by calling the St. Lawrence County Housing Council at 386-8576 Ext. 57. More info is also available at that number or at mtaylor@slchc.org.
