Village officials should consider Start-Up NY plan

Posted

To the Editor:

As not only a Democratic candidate for Massena Village Trustee, but also a resident concerned about the stalled local economy, I would like to urge local officials to take a closer look at programs such as the recently launched Start-Up NY. Start-Up NY is a new initiative that provides significant incentives to businesses such as the ability to operate 100 percent tax-free for 10 years.

Eligible businesses include:

• New companies that are started in NY State

• Companies with employees in NY State that expand significantly

• Out of state companies that relocate to NY State.

According to the Start-Up website, http://startup.ny.gov, the Massena Industrial Park has been designated as an approved location as part of the SUNY Potsdam Start-Up NY plan.

We should leverage and promote the fact that we have an approved Start-Up location in Massena. If we proactively pursue both entrepreneurs who may be looking to start a new business as well as existing companies currently operating outside of NY such as those in neighboring Canadian cities, we will have a better chance of attracting new businesses to the area.

Since the Start-Up NY law only allows businesses that are not in competition with existing local businesses, any new company that locates to Massena will only add to the overall economy. The added jobs combined with increased spending in the area would give a much needed boost to the economy. It is my sincere hope that we will actively pursue the opportunities afforded to us by the inclusion of the Massena Industrial Park in an approved Start-Up NY plan.
