To the Editor
Gavin Regan is not running to be a DMV clerk; he’s not running to be a Deputy Clerk; he’s running to continue to be St. Lawrence County Clerk! If you remember that fact, consider that he has had almost 8 months in this position, vs. Ms. Rupp’s 2 months.
Let’s look at how each got there. Both candidates were appointed; Mrs. Rupp by Patty Ritchie; Mr. Regan by Governor Cuomo. But, Mr. Regan’s qualifications were investigated for several weeks before he was named. From college transcripts, to former employers, to character references-- all were examined thoroughly. He had to prove his effectiveness in every thing he had been involved in during his adult life. He was personally interviewed in Albany by the Governor’s Appointments Secretary. Only after he passed with flying colors, was he named County Clerk.
On the other hand, Maureen Hoxie, a long-time DMV employee wrote: “First, Mrs. Rupp did not work her way up anywhere. She was appointed, very briefly, to the position of County Clerk, the same way Gavin Regan was. Her rise from DMV clerk to Deputy was also merely an appointment, and not one based on any particular abilities. She was simply the only person willing to accept the job from Mrs. Ritchie, as everyone knew the job was just that: a political appointment with no job security, as the Deputy Clerk serves at the discretion of the County Clerk, and Mrs. Ritchie had such lofty political ambitions that any appointment under her wasn’t very secure.”
In a matter of weeks, his hard work, fairness, creativity, and people-skills won over almost all of Mr. Regan’s overwhelmingly Republican staff, many of whom had read so much hostile press that they were prepared to dislike the man. They soon started spreading the word about what a good job he was doing, and how much they liked working for, and with, him.
His reports to the legislators show that, under his leadership, with his excellent Deputy, Cathy Steeter and hard working staff’s help, the County Clerk's department is cutting expenses and raising revenues.
Forget petty partisanship; think of St. Lawrence County’s need for good leaders who can do the job!
Vote Regan on November 8th.
