Town of Pierrepont creating vets memorial

To the Editor:

A group of volunteers are working to establish a Veterans Memorial for those who have served their country from the Town of Pierrepont.

After research and a trip to Clayton, we’re looking at building the memorial out of brick versus bronze or marble.

This way if a person is missed, we will have two blank rows where they can be easily added. The amount of contributions we receive will decide the wars and conflicts we can cover.

Combat veterans first, then a section stating (those who also served) for the military personnel who were supplying and supporting those who were in combat zones.

Sue Thomas has researched the brick companies and came up with one that will engrave and ship to us at a cost of about $20 apiece. That $20 does not include mortar, cement and labor.

A gift of $25 per name (brick) will be a good start.

The town historian, Barb Daniels, has done extensive research of cemeteries and archives of veterans of past wars.

So we don’t miss anyone, if you know of someone whose name is not on the 4H’s Honor Roll (on wall in Town Hall, Pierrepont) you can call Barb Daniels, 379-0804; Sue Thomas, 265-5844; or Ann Huntley, 386-3483.

Donations can be sent to Pierrepont Veterans Memorial, 864 State Highway 68, Canton, New York 13617.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thomas Latimer
