Time to study possibility of Town of Norwood

To the Editor:

I read the article concerning Steve Warr’s view about “dissolution” (North Country This Week, Oct. 12-18). Much of his views are opinions not facts.

I realize everyone’s vote will be based on their own opinion of this matter and not just the facts concerning it.

I feel that the Village of Potsdam residents don’t care about the rest of the people in the town; especially the people living in the Village of Norwood. Much animosity has been created and it will not easily go away even if the Village of Potsdam does not pass this dissolution proposition.

I thought that Norwood Mayor Jim McFadden was nuts when he first proposed “The Town of Norwood.” Realizing that my taxes will double or more if this proposition passes, I am in favor of such a study.

I know that this new Township would change the entire landscape of the Village of Potsdam’s dissolution study. Too bad it was not included in the original study.

What would the new Town of Norwood look like if the 13668 postal area pulled out of the Town of Potsdam tax base?

This Norwood Township would acquire the Brookfield taxes paid on the Norwood and Yaleville generating facilities.

NNCS, BOCES, CSX Railroad, Sheehan’s Asphalt facility, Potters Industries, J. C. Merriman’s and Barrett’s would become part of the Town of Norwood. (Losing Barrett’s would really make the Town of Norfolk happy).

There are many other smaller businesses in the 13668 area that would be lost by the Town of Potsdam as a tax base.

This new township would all ready have a Vol. Fire Dept., a rescue squad, police protection, a DPW, a municipal office building, a post office, a recreation dept., a zoning board, building inspector and a public library.

We would need a local court system but this could generate money for our new Town. We could compete for new businesses and industries with the additional road front properties acquired on Rt. 56.

When the officials from Seneca Falls told their story, nothing was mentioned about loosing part of their tax base to another “Town.”

I still stand on the principal that I will never shop within the Village of Potsdam once this matter is settled on Nov. 8.

I do not like being threatened that my taxes can be doubled by a vote that I cannot participate in. \I hope that there is an article in your paper before Nov. 8 concerning this new event created by the possibility of dissolution of the Village of Potsdam.

There is much interest being generated here in Norwood about its future and becoming a township.
