To the Editor:

To the man sitting under the movie theater marquee who booed and yelled “Go home!” as my rainbow flag-carrying group passed in the Dairy Princess Parade:

First let me say, I am home. I have lived in Canton for almost 25 years – nearly half my life. I raised my family here and have worked tirelessly – at school, at church, in the community – to help make Canton a wonderful place to call home.

I don’t march with my PFLAG, PRISM, and UU Church friends because my son is gay, or because one of my best friend’s children is transgender, or because some of my most cherished friends and esteemed colleagues are gay or lesbian.

I march because I want to live in a place that feels safe, comfortable, and happy for everyone; I want everyone to be treated with the kindness, dignity, and respect they deserve, no matter who they love, what they look like, or how they identify themselves.

I look forward to marching in the Dairy Princess Parade every year; it’s such fun to be greeted with broad smiles, applause, and cheers. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard a reaction like yours.

I hope no child, grandchild, or relative of yours is unable to be their true self because of fear that their beloved dad, granddad, or uncle will react with hate and disapproval.

But I am grateful that they at least live in a community where there are people who will love and respect them for who they are, and places they can go to feel accepted and supported.

Thanks to all who marched with pride on Saturday, and to the many more who cheered and showed support along the way. It makes a difference.
