Stefanik delivered on transparency promise, says Louisville resident

To the Editor:

Elise Stefanik promised to fight hard to protect Fort Drum which is the largest Army installation in the northeast and the largest single site employer in Upstate New York.

She also promised to work across the aisle, promote government accountability, transparency, and constituent outreach.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee and Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Readiness, Congresswoman Stefanik fought to strengthen military readiness and Fort Drum under the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). She has advocated for Fort Drum to become the East Coast home for a missile defense system which could mean hundreds of new jobs and millions of dollars for the north country's economy. Congresswoman Stefanik was an original cosponsor of the POSTURE Act which includes language that ensures the active duty Army does not fall below 480,000 personnel.

Congresswoman Stefanik has approached the issues facing the 21st Congressional District with a positive spirit and a willingness to work across the aisle while maintaining her core principles. Citing her strong, bipartisan record on North Country education issues, the New York State United Teachers announced on August 11, 2016 their endorsement of Congresswoman Stefanik.

Congresswoman Stefanik promised her constituents transparency. Her constituents can see how she voted on any issue and an explanation of her votes on Facebook and her website. She also posts her schedule on her web site.

To further enhance her promise of legislative transparency, Congresswoman Stefanik introduced the Establishing Digital Interactive Transparency Act (R.R. 5493) on June 14, 2016. The EDIT Act would create a truly transparent legislative process by tracking and monitoring changes to a bill from its conception, through committee markup, to the House of Representatives and Senate floor for amendments and voting, all the way to the President’s desk.

The bill directs the Librarian of Congress to ensure that each version of a bill or resolution which is made available for viewing on the Congress.gov website is presented in a manner which permits the viewer to follow and track online, within the same document, any changes made from previous versions of the bill or resolution.

In addition to offices in Glens Falls, Watertown and Plattsburgh, the mobile office staff of Congresswoman Stefanik has visited over 45 towns to provide constituent services.

Elise has been an excellent representative. Please vote to return her to Congress on November 8.
