St. Lawrence County rural roads are not in that bad of shape, says Heuvelton man

To the Editor:

I'm afraid I respectfully disagree with the Aug. 27-Sept. 3 Letter to the Editor “Use Federal Money to Repair Rough Rural Road,” first, our rural roads are not in that bad a shape.

Living on a rural road, I think our roads could get a lot worse before they need much maintenance work. We don't know of any rural roads we think need fast attention where the grooving is less important than any repairs needed. If the road isn't perfect, then slow down. Better to slow the speeders down and save a life or many more with the grooves in the roadway.

In fact, the town roads around here are better than a lot of state roads, including 37 and 68.

Now, the grooving of the roads: that saves lives, wakes/alerts drivers if they cross the centerline. That is money well spent because you or I could be the ones killed or maimed by an inattentive, distracted, or sleepy driver: or our children, parents, loved ones period.

I'd consider a bad road to be one which has potholes that can be axle-breakers or worse or pull-areas that grab a tire and changes the car's direction. A case of bad shoulders isn't even a bad road to most, but I wouldn't mind the same grooving on the shoulders where they are paved, such as the new road at the airport. But that fiasco is another story.
