Special Olympics held at SUNY Canton a success

To the Editor:

Special Olympics New York, North Country Region, would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the SUNY Canton Athletic Department staff, athletes and athletic trainers.

Their enthusiastic and invaluable assistance contributed to a truly memorable experience for local Special Olympic athletes Saturday, May 2. Competitions were held on the SUNY Canton campus in both the Roos House and Dana Gym.

Also vital to the day’s success was participation by SUNY Canton students from the: Early Childhood Education, Greek Life, Criminal Justice Student Association, Pi Nu Epsilon and Alpha Phi Omega. Students from the Physical Therapy Assistant and Sports Management programs played key roles in providing a positive atmosphere for Special Olympians.

Sincere appreciation also goes out to Clarkson University Physical Therapist students, Parishville High School and St Lawrence Central Student Councils, SUNY Potsdam Circle K, Norwood-Norfolk Kiwanis and Key Club. These volunteers truly embodied the concept of teamwork.

The day would not have been a success without the community assistance from the Quad Town Lions Club, Team NYSARC, New York State Police and Canton Police officers. Gratitude is also extended to American Legion Post Norwood, Rose & Kiernan and Stewarts Shops for their financial support.

We cannot leave out St. Lawrence University. They hosted an outstanding track event in December which inspired Special Olympic athletes for their Summer competition training.

Special Olympics is extremely grateful for the consistent and inspiring support from the Canton and Potsdam collegiate and neighboring high school communities along with civic groups, local businesses and law enforcement. Special Olympic athletes are truly benefiting from being citizens of such positive communities.
