Skills, background can contribute to growth, says Canton Town Board candidate

To the Editor:

I am honored to have been nominated as one of two Democratic candidates for the Canton Town Board. I have lived and worked in Canton for the past 25 years. My jobs have allowed me to become involved in the community and to get to know Canton on a deeper level.

As a staff attorney with North Country Legal Services, I represented low-income clients in cases involving landlord/tenant issues and public benefits, as well as individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness. I have represented both children and adults in Family Court. I have been on all sides of the criminal justice system, as a prosecutor, a defense attorney, and a judge. I now teach in the Legal Studies department at SUNY Canton, while continuing the practice of law part-time.

I have the ability to see issues from a variety of viewpoints and I understand that reasonable people can have differing opinions.

Even in the adversarial world of law, I have always tried to work cooperatively with all involved to reach a mutually beneficial resolution, whenever possible. I believe in treating everyone with respect.

I am running for Town Board because I believe I can use my skills and background to contribute to Canton’s positive growth and vitality. From the diverse population to the natural resources to the creative talents of our residents, there are so many ways that Canton can grow and develop without losing its natural charm.

I would like to see a long-term plan and vision for Canton. I would like to see a focus on sustainable development. I would like to see us use and enhance our natural resources. I want to encourage community awareness of, and participation in, our local government.

I urge you to get involved. Let your board members know your opinions. The more we work together, the better it will be for Canton. Please speak up for Canton’s future and vote on Nov. 3.
