Pynchon seeking third term as trustee in Canton

To the Editor:

I am running for a third two-year term as Village Trustee and I am seeking your support for re-election.

My first two terms as Village Trustee have been challenging and rewarding. I have learned a lot about municipal government and how our Village operates, and about working closely with my fellow Board members and Village staff, representatives of the Town, and interested residents to get things done. Our Board has worked together to focus on the essentials of a strong and well-run Village: excellent staff, sound budget, vital services and infrastructure, and public safety.

I believe we are making important strides in areas of community and economic development, from downtown revitalization efforts to plans for community trails and appropriate development of our waterfront areas. We are working to ensure that our neighborhoods, streets, and sidewalks are safe and comfortable for everyone. The joint Village/Town Recreation Committee hired a new Director of Recreation and we are excited about ideas and plans for growing our community recreation programs.

I am particularly proud of the work of Canton’s Sustainability Committee, which we created in my first term. They are a dedicated and knowledgeable group making a difference in areas related to energy, transportation, and food and agriculture. Following the very successful Solarize Canton campaign, with their help the Village earned state designation as a Clean Energy Community, making us eligible for $100,000 in grant funding for clean energy projects.

Looking ahead we hope to finalize Canton’s move to solar power for the municipality and continue work to establish a second source of municipal water. We will work to make Canton a welcoming place for business and visitors, with a focus on developing our waterfront areas to their full potential. We will launch a new municipal website and look forward to working closely with Canton’s Chamber of Commerce to support local business and spread the word about all Canton has to offer.

I am honored to be co-chairing Canton’s Comprehensive Plan Committee with Town Councilman Jim Smith in a real demonstration of the strength and potential of working closely with the Town officials and residents. We have assembled a committee of Village and Town residents, including from Rensselaer Falls, who are committed to spending the next year working together to chart a course for Canton’s future. We look forward to substantial public participation in the process.

I truly enjoy serving Canton as your Deputy Mayor and Village Trustee. I am proud of the positive and respectful working relationships we have built on the Village Board – we have fun working together and welcome the engagement of members of the community in our efforts.

I hope Canton will support my bid for a third term on the Village Board so we can continue to work to do what we think is best for Canton with the honesty, integrity, and openness you have come to expect. Thank you.
