To the Editor:
By way of introduction the Swe-kat-si Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution dates back to 1896, when it was founded in Ogdensburg, NY.
For our first project, we raised money to create the Piquet Monument. This monument is in honor of the founder of Ogdensburg, Abbé François Picquet, and was placed on the grounds of the 1749 Fort La Presentation.
The monument was dedicated in 1899. Furthermore, one of our members, Sally James Farnham (a contemporary of Frederic Remington), created the statue “Spirit of Liberty” a tribute to the Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War which is located on the Ogdensburg Public Library lawn.
Recently (2013) we solicited funding, combined with our own donation, to purchase and place a monument in honor of our Revolutionary War Patriots at Groulx Park. Some of you helped us with this project and we thank you. We are proud of our history with the City of Ogdensburg.
I am writing to the public to ask if there would be interest in helping us raise money to purchase and install a flagpole on the front lawn of the Ogdensburg Public Library. The library has only a bracket on the building to hang a small flag.
It is a dream for the Swe-kat-si Chapter NSDAR and the staff of the library to have a large flag on display at the library. The cost of the flagpole, which the Library Board has chosen, is $1200. We hope to have the flagpole installed this spring.
We appreciate your consideration, either individually or collectively, and will gratefully accept any donation you may generously offer. Donations may be sent directly to the Library, and checks may be written payable to the Ogdensburg Public Library Flagpole Project. Whenever anyone passes the Ogdensburg City Library they will see the colors we hold so dear.
The Daughters of the American Revolution promotes and encourages a strong patriotic feeling and respect for ‘The Flag of the United States of America’. This project is called “Flying Proud at the Ogdensburg Public Library”. Feel free to contact our chapter for information.
