Presidential voting issues in Potsdam

To the Editor:

No mater what party you are, you must have been sadly disappointed in the process at the polling place in Potsdam. It appears they wanted to discourage as many people as possible from voting. Here is my experience. At 11:30 a.m. Tuesday I drove by the town hall and the line was out into the street and the parking lot was totally full.

I went to Walmart and Tractor Supply and stopped back around. No line out front. I tried to park in the lot and got the only spot available and there were five or six cars behind me. I went in the back door and the line was all the way to the front door of the building. I went to the back of the line; stood for five minutes and an older lady walked by, going out, muttering to herself. I asked, "What is the problem in there". She replied, "I stood out here for one hour to find out that if you knew your voting district number you could go right in and vote!"

There were no signs indicating this anywhere, so people just got in line. I simply went in, went to district 8 signed in as a Republican and got a ballot. I opened it in the booth and it was a Democratic ballot. I went back and had to get the correct ballot.

Then I voted and went to talk to a pleasant young man who stated he was on the County Elections Committee. I gave him two suggestions. 1. Get another polling place and split this mess up. Not enough parking and also poorly organized (signage). I also asked him to get some chairs in the hall now so some of us older people with arthritis could sit down while we wait; although I was done. I left and hopefully he got some chairs.

The crowd stuck in line responded with applause and yeas at my recommendations. Am I missing something here or do they really not want this many people voting? If this the best the county can do than we really do need help. Am I the only one who witnessed and felt this?
