To the Editor:
I was recently notified by Bruce Henderson, Superintendent of Public Works, that I was violating Chapter 145 Sidewalks Section 145-5. This is keeping sidewalks clean of the Village of Potsdam Municipal code.
This states that “All persons owning or occupying or having charge of any properties in this municipality shall keep the same and any and all sidewalks adjacent to such premises thoroughly clean from all dirt, filth, snow, ice and any unsanitary matter.”
So I would like to say thank you for bringing the sand on the sidewalks to my attention. This includes the sidewalks in front of my properties at 82-84 Market St. and 29 Pierrepont Avenue. I was unaware of the problem but I will clean and maintain them in the future.
I do think this issue could have been solved more quickly had you come to me, the property owner, first, instead of the village, Since you are so observant it would be beneficial to the community if you could also bring all the uneven sidewalks to the attention of the village.
Many are uneven, tilted and cracked posing a tripping hazard to all that use them. This could prevent lawsuits in the future, which would cause unnecessary expenses to us taxpayers. Thank you in advance for you help in keeping our sidewalks safe and clean for adamant walkers like yourself.
