Parishville man questions public employee raises

To the Editor:

On Monday night the Town Board of Parishville voted for raises across the board. A $5,000 (12.1%) raise for the Highway Superintendent, $9,033 for the tax collector/town clerk and a $4,500 for the current town supervisor.

All other town employees also got a raise. Melvin Sweeney the democratic candidate supported the raises and stated that they do hard work and a good job.

I can see a 2% or 3% raise, but this is not fiscally responsible and we do not give raises for doing a good job. Public employees are paid to do a good job; it's expected.

It should also be noted that Melvin Sweeney's wife works for the town and will benefit from the approved raises at the meeting.

There was a lot of support for the raises at the meeting, but from relatives/town employees that these raises will directly benefit.

Brian Gary does not support these raises and has stated that he feels the money should be spent for programs for our children, new sidewalks, and upgrade the handicap accessibility at the town hall building access currently does not meet the American with Disabilities Act.

Brian does not have any family members that work for the town or any hidden motive to run for the town board except that he just wants to see change.

The good old boy system of patting each others back at the expense of the tax payers in this town must come to an end. Vote for Brian Gary!
