Opinion: Van House willing to be accountable for finances, says Rensselaer Falls resident

To the Editor:

I just recently met Derek Van House candidate for county treasurer so to be honest I don't know much about him personally other than he seems, at first meeting, to be a confident respectful person but that is all I know of him personally.

What I do know about him is he is a CPA which for those of you who don't know is a certified public accountant. Why is this important?

As the son of a CPA I know that this means he not only has five years of higher education in the field of accounting but he has also passed a very rigorous test given over three days, eight hours a day.

It doesn't end there - after obtaining his certification he is required to complete many hours of continuing education each year in order to retain it.

This certification also means he is accountable (no pun intended). CPAs are required by law to stand behind their work, if they make a mistake when working on your taxes, they are the ones who are responsible unlike a regular accountant.

If you are called into court or questioned it is not just you that must appear he is the one who must justify his work and his calculations.

This year he is running for county treasurer and is the only CPA in the race and if elected he will be the only one in our county government.

At a time when money and finances are so important to all of us I think it's important to have someone who is willing to stand behind their work 100 percent

So come Nov. 8 go with the man willing to be held accountable, Derek Van House for county treasurer
