Opinion: State should fund indigent defense, says Heuvelton resident

To the Editor:

In response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's decision to veto indigent defense funding law: I think it is way too easy for Gov. Cuomo and legislators to mandate, without recourse, expenses to the counties when it is clearly a state requirement to see that those funds are available.

I hope, come election time again, that people will remember these mandates where all the state is doing is shifting its own requirement to other, poorer entities in these days of no more taxes and the pathetic constant mandates that keep the counties in our state broke and struggling.

This is only one of many instances of the state foisting its own obligations onto others by simple mandates that no one can object to, talk about, or even give their opinions on.

Call this the straw that broke the camel's back or whatever you wish, it is equivalent to taxation without representation and even a callous, uncaring attitude from the state's leaders, amounting to a complete disconnect from reality.

Cuomo should step down and look for a new area of expertise, because he hasn't shown any respect in the way the office works.
