Opinion: St. Lawrence County Legislator Acres wants your vote to continue ‘great progress’
I am Kevin Acres, current St. Lawrence County Legislative Board Chairman, and your elected representative for District 8, which includes all of the town of Madrid, the rural parts of the townships of Canton, Pyrites and Potsdam west of SH 345. I am running for reelection and am seeking your support in an effort to continue the progress that we have made these past four years.
In January of 2015, our county was in financial trouble. We had a negative fund balance of three million dollars. We were on the state comptroller’s list of most fiscally distressed municipalities. Under my leadership and with my fellow Republican legislators, we put a plan of action in place to address our deficit and save our “sinking ship”.Today, I am happy to report that our fund balance is now plus $18.3 million. We no longer borrow millions annually to meet our cash flow needs. We have also lowered the county portion of your January tax bill in each of the last three years, and anticipate a decrease again this year. It has taken a cooperative effort by all to achieve this amazing turnaround.
I need your support and vote to continue this great progress. I have the experience: eight years on the county legislative board with the last two years as chairman and one year as vice chairman, twenty-two years on the Madrid Waddington school board and six years on the BOCES board. I have been self-employed for thirty-five years and raised a family of three sons, who have all graduated from college and are on their own career paths.
It has been my honor to serve the citizens of St. Lawrence County as your representative.
