Opinion: Setting the record straight about the Waddington Recorder

To the Editor:

I must take exception to the Letter to the Editor “Not All Equipped With Skills to Serve the Public” which ran in the Nov. 4-10 issue of North Country This Week.

The writer makes several ad hominem attacks on Mark Scott, without offering proof beyond the statement that some articles in a local newspaper that Mark publishes do not carry a byline.

I must ask the writer: Aren’t you aware that the “Waddington Recorder” is published by Mr. Scott? Aren’t you aware that Mr. Scott created the “Recorder”, published it at his own expense for years, and continues to ensure that the “Recorder” comes out on a regular basis? Do you really think that anyone who reads the Recorder is unaware that this newspaper reflects Mr. Scott’s views? Don’t you agree that the “Recorder” is a significant benefit to the community?

My wife and I have known Mark Scott and his family since we each arrived in Waddington in the mid- to late-1990s. I have known Mark to be active in his church, in the local Chamber of Commerce, in civic projects of all kinds.

I have seen Mark establish multiple local businesses. I have worked with Mark on community projects. I have supported his efforts to be involved with local government, and have voted for him in every election.

I know Mark Scott to be kind, gentle, and intelligent. He has the best interests of the town at heart. Mark is persistent in working toward a better future for our community. I appreciate his efforts, and I thank him for his hard work.

Since many people who read “North Country Now” may not be familiar with Mark Scott, they might not know how reprehensible are the above-mentioned ad hominem attacks against him. I wanted to set the record straight.
