I am sure I am not alone in feeling disheartened and pessimistic about the political climate in our country. The question which keeps entering my thoughts is, “What are we teaching our children?” Have we cast aside the basic principles of honesty, respect, tolerance, and empathy?

Now more than ever, we need citizens who strive to get information from multiple reputable sources other than social media. We need to pursue evidence and fact-checking. We need to listen with open minds and be courageous enough to leave our own political agenda space long enough to view others as human beings worthy of dignity and respect.

We may not always agree, but we can treat others with civility rather than name-calling and hostility. And just because we disagree, that does not justify claiming all viewpoints other than our own are “fake news.”

Now more than ever, we need leaders who are motivated by concern for the common good and for all people. We need leaders who will listen and personally engage with constituents and fellow lawmakers. We need leaders who are put in office by individuals rather than by wealthy corporations.

After completing extensive research using multiple reputable sources on the issues and candidates for the Congressional Representative from the 21st District, I am convinced that we need to elect Tedra Cobb on November 6.
