Opinion: Our country deserves better, vote for Cobb, says Potsdam resident

This fall election may prove to be the most crucial in our lifetime. We remain concerned that our House congressperson represent the interests of the North Country, including growing the economy, pushing for affordable and inclusive health care, supporting our military, and protecting the environment. One candidate believes strongly in these issues.

She also believes that assault-type weapons have no place in the hands of a civil citizenry earning her the coveted NRA grade of “F.” These are all issues which affect us directly and should be on the minds of voters in November when comparing candidates.

However, there is a more important question we should all be asking: What kind of America do we want? Do we want one where the president has been documented with uttering over 5000 lies since taking office? Do we want one where appointed secretaries in many agencies of government have ties which raise the specter of conflict of interest?

Most importantly, do we want a country in which the president has repeatedly demonstrated morally repugnant behavior toward women, those with disabilities, all immigrants, and most recently those who have been a victim of sexual assault? While our existing representative felt compelled to label those most recent remarks as “inappropriate,” a rebuke more suitable regarding giggling in church, her opponent condemned that behavior in no uncertain terms.

Our present representative continues to be complicit in the president’s behavior and speech by either silence or faint rebuke. She has adopted the bully campaign approach of her idol, the president, by continuing to repeat documented inaccuracies.

If you agree that our country deserves better and should reassert our obligation to be a moral leader, please consider that when voting in November and vote for Tedra Cobb.
