Opinion: News media is necessary counterbalance, says Harrisville resident

In response to “Use Voting to Get Country Out of Crisis” which appeared in the Sept. 5–11 issue of the paper, it appears as though it is not just Democrats that are miss-informed on the state of our nations politics.

The majority of main stream media is not anti-American, and do not try to trick the American people. They certainly are not the enemy of the people as claimed by President Trump. Our nations media outlets, for the most part, are honest and in pursuit of the truth. Our media is not “state media” acting as a mouthpiece for despots and dictators, rather, most of our media is generally respected and speak truth to power.

Our news media is a necessary counterbalance informing the public of the news of the day to include informing us of the workings of our government. Indeed, without the media we would be in the dark and have to rely on gossip and hearsay. Thank goodness for Americas public media!

President Trump has a proven track record of lying, pouting off something like 7 or 10 lies a day and has racked up well over 2000 untruths since his swearing in. These are facts, not hearsay or how somebody feels.

President Trump uses divisive techniques to divide and confuse the American people. He sides with white supremacists and neo-Nazis over protestors who call out such hatred. President Trump likes and admires strong men and dictators around the world while he insults and offends and disrespects our allies. Allies that came to the aid of the United States after the attacks of 9/11. President Trump is a deceitful, dishonest, and dangerous person.

We have never witnessed a president quite like this in our lifetime, who attacks the media constantly, calls the news fake, and the journalists reporting on President Trumps missteps and misdeeds the enemy of the people.

President Trump believes the department of justice is there to protect him at the expense of justice and the American people and our Republic. This is exactly how dictators behave.

And let’s not forget about the investigation into interference in our elections and what part the President may have played in that interference. An investigation that he claims is a so-called “witch hunt”. This investigation has already nailed down 8 convicted felons, 26 indictments of individuals and 3 corporations indicted.

This all done by the Special Counsel of Robert Mueller who just so happens to be a Republican. These convictions and indictments are anything but a witch hunt. President Trump denies such attacks have taken place on his behalf and has done nothing to protect our nation from more such attacks.

He sides with and claims to believe Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial of interference over the findings of our American intelligence agencies.

That is quite unnerving in itself. So yes, please vote! Consider voting to put a needed check on presidential power. Our Republic may well depend on it.
