To the Editor:
You wonder why this county is broke? Apparently it's because the legislature doesn’t know math.
I’m talking about the article about Legislator Forsythe (“St. Lawrence County legislator wants DEC to adjust muzzle-loading season to increase deer population,” Dec. 21) who wants to increase the deer herd.
Please explain to me how shooting a deer in early October that isn't bred yet is different from shooting one five weeks later that is bred?
That is the equivalent of saying if you cut the blossom off the apple tree, before it becomes an apple, you'll still be able to make a pie later!
The true ways to increase the deer population are as follows:
1. Eliminate shooting does altogether.
2. Shoot bucks that are only four-point and above.
3. Shorten the season. Our season in NY is at least 40 percent longer than most states.
4. Eliminate destroy permits that all the large farms get. Some of these farms are killing in excess of 50 deer a year.
