Opinion: Heuvelton man surprised by survey results about taking guns away following domestic violence conviction

To the Editor:

I realize the surveys aren't scientifically valid but I was still taken aback that the number who disagreed with the recent NcNow survey about a proposal from Gov. Andrew Cuomo that would force St. Lawrence Country residents convicted of domestic violence crimes to surrender their firearms.

A conviction for domestic violence is no joke although I think some may have noticed that it took a conviction to trigger that.

Plus, people with guns are normally more vocal and outspoken; I know a lot of them as friends and acquaintances and all but three agreed with taking the guns upon conviction. Besides, most domestic violence cases aren't written up as to send those folks to jail; it has to be pretty bad for it to get to court.

I wouldn't want to give up my legal arms either, but I still agree with having them taken away upon a conviction.
