Jobs. How do we create them? When will they be created? What kinds will there be? These types of questions seem to permeate throughout all aspects of our society.

Politicians tell us that they are going to create jobs, but there never seems to be any details or outlining of the specifics. All across America the number one issue that people feel is most important to them is the economy. Job creation and putting people back to work is crucial in order for a strong economy to exist.

In the past, America was a nation of industrialization and manufacturing. From factories, to mines, to mills, to plants; Americans produced something. But now, the world is a different place and with the rise of globalization and technological advancements, America has changed too. The future of America’s economy rests on innovation and opportunity.

A recent article in the Watertown Daily Times highlighted a concept that could potentially encourage economic growth here in the North Country. The article noted that an entrepreneur from California who is a chemical engineer that specializes in growing hemp is showing interest in the area.

Fortunately for him, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law a measure permitting hemp producers to partner with colleges and universities in a research pilot program. The article also mentioned that the development of a hemp processing facility in upstate New York could expand business opportunities for the people in our region.

Northern New York has two key components which fit well with hemp production. First, the amount of fertile land that was have to grow the crop and second, the close proximity to a major transportation artery. The St. Lawrence River serves as a gateway to allow for the flow of goods coming and going from the Great Lakes and the Atlantic.

Hemp production in Northern New York has the potential to serve as an economic propellant that can revitalize the economy in this area. The hemp produced can be used to make clothes, ropes, paper, cardboard and plastics. The hemp seed oil can be used in food items and also can be used for medicinal purposes. The biggest industry in Northern New York is agriculture. By harnessing and tapping into this idea, we strengthen our economy and create jobs.
