To the Editor:
I would like to thank the United Universalist Church of Canton for their unapologetic support for Black Lives Matter. I drive by the church, see the big orange Black Lives Matter banner, and smile knowing that there are people in Northern New York that get it.
It’s commendable that the UU Church is willing to face the public scrutiny that we all know will come, to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
For those who disagree with the movement, I encourage you to ask yourself one simple question: “Do I believe that black lives matter?” Do you? Do you see value in a black life? If you’re answer is yes (which I hope it is) then you’re really not in disagreement with the values of the BLM movement.
It would be wonderful to see other businesses/organizations follow the UU Church’s lead and also have the courage to make a statement!
It’s a small gesture with big meaning, especially to people of color who may have felt unwelcome in the North Country at times.
