Opinion: Auditing skills will not fix St. Lawrence County financial problems, Canton resident says

To the Editor:

I find it very odd that we have a group of St. Lawrence County Legislators who are asking for reform in the treasurer’s office when they chose to sit idle for months.

Our former treasurer Kevin Felt decided to cut a valuable position even when you had several people in the treasurer’s office advising otherwise.

Derek Van House fails to realize that the treasurer or the deputy treasurer that writes the checks cannot reconcile those accounts. He thinks he is going to go in there and use his “auditing skills” to fix the county. He will not be allowed to reconcile those accounts.

We need the right people in that office and not some one who is looking for a career change. The right person for us is Robert Santamoor.

We need have a person who knows how to do the job. Van House is going to spend the next two years learning how to do the job instead of actually fixing the problems.

The board members that are openly supporting Van House are feeding him information about what goes on in the treasurer’s department but many of them have never stopped in to see what any of the departments deal with every day.

So how can they feed him information that is true or reliable? How can we trust a board when none of them read the 2013 audit or the 2014 audit?

How can we trust what Donald Hooper has to say when he is the Chair of the Finance Committee? Shouldn’t he have known that the books weren’t reconciled? I would expect that the chair of the finance committee would have read the audits of the last ten years.

Robert Santamoor has said this many times, “how do we plan for the future, when we do not know where we have been?”

So I ask the voters of St. Lawrence County to stop reading the lies that this politically motivated board of legislators are feeding the county. One thing Robert Santamoor has never done is lie. If you have a question for him, ask it.

So I ask you this final question: do we really want someone who is being supported by those who chose to not help fix the county or do we want a candidate who will “owe” these individuals?

Vote Robert Santamoor on November 8th because Experience matters, but most of all Integrity matters.

Jonathan Santamoor
