Ogdensburg Price Chopper does good deed

To the Editor:

I just wanted to make you aware of a good deed Price Chopper did for my family this week.

Some background on us. My stepson is in 5th grade and plays basketball for the Heuvelton Bulldogs. He didn't have a basketball hoop at home to practice with because we had just moved here and been struggling a little financially. Being resourceful, he used one of our old trash cans to practice with alone and with his friends.

One day about a month ago while walking through Price Chopper, he noticed a display for a Sunkist product and it featured a complete brand new basketball hoop and stand with a Sunkist logo. He was totally in love with the display and even asked if we could maybe ask to buy the display for him. We were shopping there a few days later and decided to approach the manager of the store to inquire about the display. We explained our financial situation and our son’s love of basketball and offered to buy the display when they were finished with it. The manager, whom was very understanding said she would look into it and find out if it could be purchased but thought the store may even be willing to donate the display if they could and for the right reason. My son was so excited at the thought of owning the display that he wrote a letter to the manager that night offering to work for Price Chopper for free if he could have the display and we hand delivered it to the manager the next day. She was very impressed and said she would get back with us once she knew what they could do.

We didn’t hear anything for over a month and even saw that the hoop display was gone on one of our last visits. Assuming it had been given to someone else, we forgot about it. Imagine our surprise when we received a call from another manager, Mike, yesterday asking when we could pick the display up at no cost. Price Chopper had decided to donate it to my son after reading his letter which we thought was absolutely amazing and we are set to pick up the unit from their location in Ogdensburg.

We just wanted to write to your paper and mention this because we thought it was way above the call of duty, extremely generous and worthy of mention.

It’s this kind of generosity from local businesses that builds trust in the community and customer loyalty. We are regular shoppers of Price Chopper and they definitely have earned our lifelong loyalty.
