The St. Francis/Newman Center was not closed due to “diminishing parishioner loyalty” as reported by you (Potsdam Church Buys Newman Center,” Feb. 9-15). That decision was made by the previous pastor of St. Mary’s Church, and the loyal parishioners of St. Francis had little recourse in the matter.
The decision resulted in much grief and rupture to a vibrant and spirit-filled parish dedicated to collegiate ministry.
The closure of any church is a profound and sensitive experience not easily erased from parishioners’ hearts.
On the other hand, the purchase of the building by the Christian Fellowship Centers brings much joy in the knowledge that it will return to its intended use, a place of worship and fellowship for local Christians and the college community.
