To the Editor:

I am writing this letter in support of Andrew Moses for St. Lawrence County Family Court Judge.

I have known Mr. Moses, professionally and personally for the last several years. I have always found Andrew to be a respectful, open minded and compassionate person. Professionally, I have been present in Family Court with Mr. Moses and admire the integrity and professional manner in which he conducts himself. Personally, I have seen him and his wife Renee in the community at various events with their children. Andrew Moses is a family man that will protect the rights and well being of the families and children of St. Lawrence County.

Since Mr. Moses has been running for Family Court Judge, I have not only had the opportunity to speak to Andrew in depth about the issues that have been raised concerning the current practice of St. Lawrence County Family Court, but have been present when he has spoken to individuals in the community about these concerns.

A major concern for individuals is the amount of time people spend waiting for Family Court proceedings. Individuals need to take an excessive time off from work, which results in lost wages and in some cases, loss of employment. Mr. Moses has stated that he will look into Family Court Mediation to decrease the number of cases that the Family Court Judge hears. Another side to this scheduling issue, is that it prolongs the length of time that families are in crisis. Family Court is over scheduled and cases are adjourned for extended periods of time. Frequently it takes several months, to a year for Family Court cases to be determined. This makes it difficult for the adults involved; however, more importantly it drags out the process for the children. Family Court needs to prioritize the cases that it hears, make decisions in a timely manner, and ensure that the services the families need are offered and provided so that the children have the stability that the deserve.

People also shared with Mr. Moses, how they felt about their own Family Court experiences, the representation and treatment in court and the manner in which the Judge presided in their cases. A Judge has the responsibility to ensure that all parties are adequately and fairly represented. Individuals have been subject to ridicule in the court room and felt that they were considered “guilty” prior to any type of hearing. This is not an acceptable way of practice in a court room. Andrew Moses will listen to all parties present before making a decision that effects people’s lives.

Please vote for Andrew Moses- St. Lawrence Court Family Court Judge on November 8, 2011- Mr. Moses will improve the quality of St. Lawrence County Family Court and put the needs of our children first.
