Misinformation in letter about Mary Lou Rupp

Posted

To The Editor:

It was interesting to read the letter recently written by Beverly Sherry in support of Mary Lou Rupp.

Since Mrs. Sherry has never worked for the County Clerk’s Office, I can understand her misinformation.

Having worked there for over 30 years, I would like to correct a few of her errors.

First, Mrs. Rupp did not work her way up anywhere. She was appointed, very briefly, to the position of County Clerk, the same way Gavin Reagan was.

Her rise from DMV clerk to First Deputy was also merely an appointment, and not one based on any particular abilities.

She was simply the only person willing to accept the job from Mrs. Ritchie, as everyone knew the job was just that: a political appointment with no job security, as the Deputy Clerk serves at the discretion of the County Clerk, and Mrs. Ritchie had such lofty political ambitions that any appointment under her wasn’t very secure.

Secondly, the revenue from processing downstate dealers does not fluctuate because of who processes it or how fast or under which boss.

The County receives a set 12.7% of each dollar taken in, whether it’s processed overnight, in two days or in two weeks.

These downstate dealers are used to waiting many weeks for their work to be processed by Albany, and are not in the least dissatisfied with the job our DMV is doing.

The revenue has dropped? Did you stop to think that the revenue in all parts of the DMV has dropped, simply because the economy is so bad?

Add to that the increase in DMV work being done by mail and internet, and yes, the revenue may have dropped.

And while Mrs. Rupp was acting County Clerk, the revenue from the downstate dealers was offset considerably by the unreasonable amount of comp time and overtime she permitted, all in the name of getting those registrations back in the mail the next morning.

How is that intelligent or efficient?

Now they may take two or three days to get back, but the County is paying out less in overtime and comp time, improving the overall bottom line.

Name one downstate dealer, Mrs. Sherry, who has dropped out of the program because they had to wait an extra day or two.

Finally, I’d like to point out that Mr. Reagan is doing a good job in holding down costs and increasing revenues.

Not only has he cut the waste of paying thousands of dollars in unnecessary overtime and comp time, but he did what the average taxpayer wants big government to do: he cut costs by doing away with a high-paying upper management position, and continued to run the County Clerk’s office intelligently and efficiently with just one Deputy Clerk on the payroll instead of two.

Isn’t it refreshing to see someone willing to cut from the top instead of from the bottom?

Mr. Reagan has my vote this November.
