To the Editor:

Citizens of Potsdam who believe the Potsdam Recreation Program is good for our community, who would like to see the program run more effectively, and who are willing to share the cost of the program fairly, should vote “yes” on the coming referendum to form a recreation district.

I believe our recreation program is a good thing. It reflects a North Country value that says we should all a take part in taking care of our children.

The proposed recreation district is the fairest possible way to fund the program. Every child in the district will have equal access to the program. Every taxpayer in the district will contribute equally to the cost. It could not be any fairer or more transparent. Village residents will continue to contribute their fair share to the rec program but now through their town tax bill rather than their village tax bill. I feel confident that Potsdam citizens will support fairness in this matter.

I am also confident that the unfettered leadership of the town council will bring new ideas and new energy to the program. They have already done an outstanding job in preparing the recreation district proposal.

I share the concerns of many that the restrictions on who can vote seem inappropriate. Unfortunately, we are stuck with the ruling from the NYS Comptroller’s office, so we must do the best we can under the circumstances.

If you want to see the rec program thrive, and you believe everyone should pay their fair share to support the program, please come out to support the recreation district. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this transition.
