Maturity is key to dealing with diversity at SUNY Potsdam, says Brasher Falls resident

To the Editor:

Diversity on today’s college campus seems to mean that people of diverse backgrounds, race, ethnicity, gender, age and economic status all spew the exact same lines of nonsense such as: “Anything a white person says is racist,” “Anything a male says is sexist,” “Pro-liberty people are bigots,” “All thought is microagression,” “You have a right to never be offended,” etc.

The one thing that campus diversity does not mean lately is diversity of ideas. People come to campus with their backgrounds, etc. and are supposed to study, debate and learn new ideas. This does not mean that you must agree with all new ideas.

It only means that you become mature enough to deal with other ideas including ideas you find disturbing. You must develop this type of maturity to get anywhere in the real world.

A great number of today’s college students seem to be begging to be protected from having to think about, study or decide anything on their own. Their whine seems to be, “Please shield me from having to deal with any idea I might find offensive. By all means shield me from the most offensive thing of all: reality! End free speech lest I should be required to think and learn. Wipe my nose. Dry my tears.”

Remember this: America is a free speech zone. Anyone not supporting this idea is not pro-liberty. Anyone who is not pro-liberty can hardly be pro-American. In fact they are known as AINO: American In Name Only.

One good thing for mature students is the fact that they will be more valuable to future employers and therefore will leave their perpetually offended peers in the dust.
