To the Editor:
I don't know if the Massena mayoral position deserves a pay raise or not. What is the current salary + perks?
What are the major responsibilities of the mayor?
Can it be expected to improve the office's activities, satisfaction, and is the current salary in line with other municipalities?
And what has happened that would justify the proposed pay raise?
The mayoral position may well support a pay raise for the mayor and the other 4 people.
$5,000 is really a paltry sum compared to the overall budget line and certainly isn't going to result in any noticeable tax increase. So if it's deserved, with solid backing in results and accomplishments, then it may very well be a wise thing to do.
On the other hand, it does go against the "no more new taxes" rule, so ... It would require answers to the above questions in order to make an informed decision.
My opinion, anyway.
