Lunch program helps 57 families over Easter in Norwood, Norfolk, Raymondville areas

To the Editor:

In June of last year, a small group of concerned community members came together to discuss a dilemma that faces children in the Norwood-Norfolk School District each summer. Children who receive free breakfast and lunch throughout the school year are suddenly without this support over school vacations. The Community Lunch Program for Kids was born!

What started as a small group of concerned citizens trying to address the problem of hungry kids when school is not in session, has turned into a standing program which will provide food for children (pre-K through age 18) through five different distributions throughout the year. Starting in June our program will be considered an extension of the Norfolk-Raymondville Food Pantry, and we will be able to receive USDA foods and foods offered at discounted prices through the Food Bank of Central New York.

At this time, we would like to acknowledge the following businesses/civic groups for supporting this program through our last four food distributions:

Stewarts’ Shops, JCEO of Malone, St. Philip’s Episcopal Guild, Norwood-Norfolk-Raymondville Outreach, Norfolk American Legion, Norwood Free Methodist Church, Raymondville Methodist Church, Norwood-Norfolk Teachers’ Association, St. Andrew’s Knights of Columbus, Walmart of Massena, the Altar Rosary Societies of The Church of the Visitation, St. Raymond’s and St. Andrew’s, The Norfolk Wesleyan Church, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and the parishioners of the Catholic Churches of Norwood, Norfolk and Raymondville. We would also like to thank the parishioners of the First Congregational and Methodist Churches of Norwood, as well as the Friends of the Norfolk and Norwood Public Libraries, and the Norfolk-Raymondville Food Pantry. We also received very generous monetary donations from several individuals who prefer to remain anonymous. Finally, thanks to Perry’s and Dollar General of Norwood, as well as FeFee’s Market and Al Smiths’ of Norfolk for allowing us to place collection boxes in their stores for this program.

Because of the generosity of all of these groups of people and businesses, we were once again able to provide large boxes of breakfast and lunch food items to 57 families with over 150 children in the Norwood-Norfolk area just before Easter vacation.

To say that we could not have done this without their support is an understatement!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
