Local leaders’ interest in NNY agriculture

To the Editor:

The farmers of Northern New York wish to recognize the leadership of Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Senator Patty Ritchie, Senator Betty Little; and Senator Joe Griffo and Assembly Agriculture Committee Chair Assemblyman Bill Magee for successfully securing the funding that underpins vital research and outreach projects that strengthen North Country agriculture and its economic value to the regional and state economies through the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP).

We also thank our North Country Assemblypersons Ken Blankenbush, Janet Duprey, Addie Russell and Teresa Sayward; and all the members of the Senate and Assembly Agriculture Committees for recognizing the need to maintain year-to-year priority projects and the critical data the NNYADP projects provide farmers for crop, production and processing decision-making.

With $300,000 in funding now secure in the 2011-2012 New York State Budget, NNYADP is moving ahead with 2011 on-farm research and outreach projects in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. The state funding support will allow critical fieldwork to continue to provide vital data for corn, berry, vegetable and maple production, alfalfa snout beetle resistance and brown root rot resistance variety breeding trials, and the production and processing of small grains, food-grade soybeans and biofuel crops.
