Learning about drones through television

To the Editor:

I have felt a renewed interest in “drones” lately and so have kept my eye open for balanced and honest assessments of the technology.

If you have access to NOVA shows (I use NetFlix personally), they have one called NOVA: “The Rise of Drones” with Craig Secher.

It covers drones from their inception all the way through present day and with some security restrictions, how they are used, flown and deployed by the United States and even about 50 other countries around the world.

It is the most balanced, pros and cons with common verbiage that is easy to digest I have ever seen on TV. It covers their strengths, weaknesses and the current planned future for them. Militarily they cover the U-2 incident of the early 60’s to present day. Even though some types of the military vehicles carry weaponry, they are so good at targeting that they are saving hundreds of thousands of deaths due to collateral damage, etc., otherwise thought to be impossible.

I highly recommend this 53-minute NOVA piece to anyone interested in drones whether it be the local toys or the heavy military applications.
