Lauther to run for Madrid Town Board

To the Editor:

I am Roland C. Lauther of Madrid and I am running for Madrid Town Board.

This past summer, for the first time, I declared a political party affiliation. My desire was to run for Madrid Town Board as a Democrat. Because my Democratic designation would not be in effect until November 8, 2017, a Democratic board member secured signatures for me, enough to be on the ballot as a Democrat.

The twist to this story comes when the Madrid Democratic Town Chair decided to not authorize me to run as a Democrat because two Democrats were already on the ballot. The town elder said that if he authorized me to run as a Democrat, he would need to organize a primary election and he wished to not spend the money, I disagreed with his decision but took no further action. This only ended my candidacy as a Democrat.

I will be on the Madrid ballot as a candidate without party affiliation. I secured ample signatures to be eligible to appear on the November 7, 2017 ballot. I want to thank all the residents of Madrid who signed my Democratic and Independent petitions. You all deserve to know the truth and to have your choice in a Demo-cratic run-off. This anomaly of the democratic process was engineered by the Democratic Chairman of the Town of Madrid.

Madrid, town voters have a rare opportunity to visit the polls and have real choices. Four candidates will be on the ballot for two board seats. They will see an incumbent’s name and three new names. This is an exciting time for our Town. Choice at the polls creates a powerful citizenry. I want you all to be powerful. Please vote.
