Helmet might have saved Canton bicyclist’s life

To the Editor:

Tuesday night, May 10, our son Jay was riding his bicycle home from play rehearsal at Canton High School, traveling down Farmer Street. He hit a pothole and was thrown from his bike onto the pavement.

He was wearing his helmet and it may have saved his life. His helmet was shattered in the area of impact. His face, shoulder and hands took the rest of the impact, and he received a concussion. He has almost no recall of the accident.

From his forehead to his knees he has numerous painful abrasions and contusions of varying severity. We were in the ER with him until 2:30 a.m., and were relieved beyond words when tests revealed there was no brain injury. The moral of this story: wear a helmet! The life you save may be your own.

A question arises out of this accident and near-tragedy. Why are Village streets still pockmarked with so many potholes? It’s mid-May, the weather is beautiful, and people of all ages can be seen riding bicycles around town.

These craters are jarring when hit by a car; to a cyclist they are life-threatening. Winter is over and has been for some time. Please, repair the streets and make Canton a safe place to live.
