The first North Country Jr. Iron Chef competition was a great success! This cooking competition for middle and high school student teams is a project of the Health Initiative and was held March 9.
Each team prepared a healthy, delicious dish with both local and commodity ingredients that could be realistically prepared in a school cafeteria.
Participating teams came from around the North Country and we thank them for their participation: Bacon Boys, Brasher Falls Central School; Black Ice, Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H, Plattsburg; Canton Bears, Canton Central School; Canton Golden Chefs, Canton Central School; Cooking Zebras, Brasher Falls Central School; DeKalb Dominators, Hermon-DeKalb Central School; Future Chefs, No. Franklin Educational Center BOCES; Healthy in Heuvelton, Heuvelton Central School; Healthy Panthers, Brushton-Moira Central School; Panther Pride Chefs, Brushton-Moira Central School; Peru Blue, Peru Central School; Seaway Tech, Seaway Technical Center BOCES; Seaway Tracker, Seaway Technical Center BOCES; Stone Cold Chefs, Potsdam Central School; Top Cats, No. Adirondack Central School; The Miss Fitz, Malone Central School; and Treble Chefs, Massena Central School.
Two expert panels judged the dishes and we thank them: Addie J. Russell, Assemblywoman of NYS Assembly District 116; Artie Frego, Food Service Director at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES; Autumn Crabtree, Student at Little River Community School; Brian Walker, Chef and Proprieter of the 1844 House; Ellie Siegfried, Student at Little River Community School; Jean Rowe, Health Initiative Board Member from United Helpers Management Company; John Kordet, of Parsley Place Herbs; Julie Holbrook, Food Service Director at Keene Central School; Kyle Mayette, Executive Chef at Clarkson University; Lauren French, Superintendent of Gouverneur Central School; Megan Kent, of Kent Family Growers; and Susan Shene, Superintendent of Clifton-Fine Central School.
