To the Editor:
I am writing to express my strong support for Derek Van House for St. Lawrence County Treasurer.
While I know and like all the candidates for treasurer, I believe Derek is best qualified for the job.
Our county finances are still in bad shape. We’re one of the most fiscally distressed counties in the state, repeatedly borrowing $10,000,000 just to meet expenses. Our unassigned fund balance at the start of 2016 was a negative $3,000,000. It’s going to take us many years to dig out of this deep financial hole.
As we work to fix the county’s financial woes, accurate financial data is crucial. Derek’s experience as a CPA will be invaluable, even more than the experience of other candidates who have worked in the treasurer’s office. Again, while I know and like them, I don’t believe those candidates are best prepared to step into the role of county treasurer.
Our county needs your vote for Derek Van House for Treasurer of St. Lawrence County.
